چکیده

1 In this paper we concentrate more on other elemental abundances (such as O, Ne, S, Ar) and their implications for the evolution of the progenitor stars. We use a much larger sample of 183 objects, of which 65 are our own observations, where the abundances have been re-derived in a homogeneous way. For 156 of them, the quality of data is considered to be satisfactory for further analysis. We confirm the difficulty of separating Type I and non-type-I objects in the classical He-N/O diagram, as found in Paper I, a problem reinforced by the variety of initial compositions for the progenitor stars. We observed oxygen variations, either depletion via the ON cycle in the more massive progenitor stars, or oxygen production in other objects. Neon production also appears to be present. These enrichments are best explained by fresh material from the core or from burning shells, brought to the surface by the 3 rd dredge-up, as reproduced in recent models (some including overshooting). All the effects appear stronger in the SMC, suggesting a higher efficiency in a low metallicity environment. Neither oxygen nor neon can therefore be used to derive the initial composition of the progenitor star: other elements not affected by processing such as sulfur, argon or, if observed, chlorine, have to be preferred for this purpose. Some objects with very low initial abundances are detected, but on average, the spatial distribution of PNe abundances is consistent with the history of star formation (SF) as derived from field stars in both Clouds. Abstract. We present the second part of an optical spectroscopic study of planetary nebulae in the LMC and SMC. The first paper, Leisy & Dennefeld (1996), discussed the CNO cycle for those objects where C abundances were available.

Heavy Element Abundances in Blue Compact Galaxies

We present high-quality ground-based spectroscopic observations of 54 supergiant H II regions in 50 low-metallicity blue compact galaxies with oxygen abundances 12 + log O/H between 7.1 and 8.3. We use the data to determine abundances for the elements N, O, Ne, S, Ar and Fe. We also analyze Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Faint Object Spectrograph archival spectra of 10 supergiant H II regions to ...

Element Abundances and Galactic Chemical Evolution

Recent developments in the study of element abundances and their impact on our understanding of the evolution of stars and the chemical evolution of the Galaxy are described. In particular, problems that may beneet, or beneet from, work on binary stellar populations are highlighted. These include: diierent mixing processes in globular cluster and eld stars, evidenced by Li and nuclei in the NeN...

Abundances in Spiral Galaxies: Evidence for Primary Nitrogen Production

We present the results of nitrogen and oxygen abundance measurements for 185 H II regions spanning a range of radius in 13 spiral galaxies. As expected, the nitrogen–to–oxygen ratio increases linearly with the oxygen abundance for high metallicity H II regions, indicating that nitrogen is predominately a secondary element. However, the nitrogen–to–oxygen ratio plateaus for oxygen abundances les...

Modeling Static Bruising in Apple Fruits: A Comparative Study, Part II: Finite Element Approach

ABSTRACT- Mechanical damage degrades fruit quality in the chain from production to the consumption. Damage is due to static, impact and vibration loads during processes such as harvesting, transportation, sorting and bulk storage. In the present study finite element (FE) models were used to simulate the process of static bruising for apple fruits by contact of the fruit with a hard surface. Thr...

Intermediate Element Abundances in Galaxy Clusters

We present the average abundances of the intermediate elements obtained by performing a stacked analysis of all the galaxy clusters in the archive of the X-ray telescope ASCA. We determine the abundances of Fe, Si, S, and Ni as a function of cluster temperature (mass) from 1 – 10 keV, and place strong upper limits on the abundances of Ca and Ar. In general, Si and Ni are overabundant with respe...

The Abundance of Interstellar Boron1

We use new Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) and archival Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) observations to study interstellar B II j1362 and O I j1355 absorption along seven sight lines. Our new column density measurements, combined with measurements of four sight lines from the literature, allow us to study the relative B/O abundances over a wide range of interstellar envi...
